Online training program offered by The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair (CCAR) being used by Mazda for its dealer network as part of their Hazardous Material handling program
Like other automotive OEMs, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is preparing its dealer network for handling of electric batteries. Specifically, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 SUV offers both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid options both of which carry lithium batteries — which are considered to be dangerous goods by both the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) as well as by Transport Canada (TC).

Ayers, CCAR President, said “We are proud that our long-standing partnership with MNAO has expanded to provide a means for dealerships involved with the transportation of hazardous materials to meet the DOT requirements that all hazardous materials employees be properly trained, tested and certified in the DOT’s Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR).” MNAO’s focus on Dangerous Goods Transportation best-management practices encompasses more than 540 U.S. dealers.
ShipMate, Inc. is also providing MNAO with access to their web-based shipping software, HazDox™ which enables dealers to properly prepare dangerous goods declarations for automotive dangerous goods by surface, air or sea. HazDox™ also provides dealers with access to Safety Data Sheets, Emergency Response Guides, UN38.3 Test Reports, DOT Special Permits and detailed instructions on how to properly mark and label dangerous goods shipments.
Since 2005, CCAR has partnered with ShipMate, Inc. to provide online Dangerous Goods Transportation training that fulfills the regulatory training obligations for the transport of dangerous goods by any mode.
HazmatU®, CCAR’s online web-based hazardous materials transportation training program, has been set up for use by the entire MNAO dealer network and for all dealership staff that work with lithium batteries, and other dangerous goods such as air bag modules, inflators, seat belt pretensioners, shocks, used engines, wet acid batteries, and paint.

Each course includes a series of training modules, learning assessments, glossary, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and a Web-Based Training Library that includes additional links, resources, downloadable files and other supplementary information. Each course is also professionally narrated. Following completion of the course of instruction, each student is offered a comprehensive final exam. Students that successfully complete the course of instruction and exam are awarded a Certificate of Completion which is recognized by the DOT and Transport Canada as having fulfilled the regulatory requirements for training, including:
- General Awareness & Familiarization
- Hazardous Materials Security Awareness
- DOT General Safety
- Function-Specific Training (Automotive Hazardous Materials)
HazmatU® is available for a $329 annual subscription per facility, which allows a dealership to train an unlimited number of employees during the subscription period.
