Last week was a special one for all of us here at CCAR and HazmatU; the Automotive Training Managers Council (ATMC) honored us with their National Excellence in Training Award for our line of HazmatU online training courses. This is the second consecutive year that the fine folks at ATMC have recognized CCAR with this annual award. WOW.
The award was presented at the ATMC reception at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday, November 5th to coincide with the ongoing AAPEX and SEMA shows. Along with CCAR, some of the others who also received recognition included Bridgestone/Firestone, NAPA, Nissan, and General Motors/Raytheon.
I was honored to accept the award on behalf of all those who work to make HazmatU such an outstanding training program, and had a chance to thank those from the North American Automotive Hazmat Action Committee (NAAHAC), as well as the many OEM’s who continue to support HazmatU — particularly Toyota and Chrysler. We are also extremely fortunate to have great collaboration and support from our awesome partners at ShipMate, Inc.

Nov. 11, 2014—CCAR (The Coordinating Committee For Automotive Repair) has been presented with a 2014 National Excellence in Training Award by the Automotive Training Managers Council (ATMC). The award was presented last week at the ATMC reception during AAPEX and SEMA Show in Las Vegas.
The ATMC National Excellence in Training Awards are given annually to recognize companies for highly effective and innovative training programs that drive the overall success of the transportation industry. Selected from numerous submissions, these companies’ programs are honored for their ability to meet the education needs of industry professionals through exceptional application of development, delivery and assessment training principles.
This is the second consecutive year that ATMC has honored the online training programs offered by CCAR with their prestigious annual award.
CCAR received the award for its HazmatU courses which helps dealerships and vocational schools comply with employee training requirements mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and by Transport Canada. HazmatU is a suite of online courses providing Dangerous Goods Transportation Best Practices to the entire U.S. and Canadian automotive industries. The online training content was recently updated to include job-specific courses, as well as courses offered in Spanish and French. Canadian courses (offered in English as well as French-Canadian) were recently added to address Transport Canada’s Dangerous Goods training requirements.
The U.S. DOT’s Hazardous Materials Regulations require that shop personnel be trained in 4 key areas: General Safety, General Awareness; Security Awareness, and Function-Specific;
- Initially within 90 days of starting on the job, and
- Recurring training a minimum of every three (3) years thereafter
These regulations apply to all those who;
- Load, unload, or handle hazardous materials
- Design, manufacture, fabricate, inspect, mark, maintain, recondition, repair, or test a package, container or packaging component that is represented, marked, certified, or sold as qualified for use in transporting hazardous materials
- Prepare hazardous materials for transportation
- Are responsible for hazardous materials transportation safety, or
- Operate a vehicle used to transport hazardous materials
The HazmatU courses are just one of a suite of online courses developed by CCAR and ShipMate, Inc. in the areas of Automotive Environmental, Hazardous Materials, and Safety (i.e. AutoEHS). In the last four years CCAR’s members have completed over one million HazmatU tests.
