DOT Issues $17K HazMat Civil Penalty

Earlier this year the Department of Transportation fined an organization $17,700 in civil penalties for three (3) separate violations.

Among the violations cited:

  • allowing an employee to perform a function subject to requirements in the Hazardous Materials Regulations when the employee had not received hazmat training
  • items not accompanied by a shipping paper properly describing the material as hazardous and containing an emergency response telephone number.

$17,700…wow!

Air bag modules, batteries, and seat belt pretensioners are all (individually and/or collectively) considered hazardous materials by the DOT. If you or your employees prepare these items for transport, or receive these items from a supplier, or deliver them yourself (i.e. ever have your parts driver drop off an air bag module at a local body shop?) then you are affected by this requirement.

HazmatU training is available 24/7 and is priced at only $299 for your entire facility. What that means is whether you employ 10 people – or more than 100 – you can train your entire staff for one low annual subscription.
